Unions representing New York City’s principals and teachers are now both asking the city to delay its plans to open school buildings next month.
As the Sept. 10 opening date approaches, the debate is heating up over how schools should welcome students back to classrooms while the city tries to keep the coronavirus contained. The Council of School Supervisors and Administrators, which represents principals and other school leaders, said on Wednesday they don’t believe it can be done safely on time and asked Mayor Bill de Blasio to begin the school year with all-online learning while pushing in-person classes to the end of September. The city’s plan calls for students to rotate the days they go to school to keep class sizes small, and learn from home the rest of the time.
